Urbanspoon for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad Now Available

Urbanspoon for iPhone

Figuring out where to eat dinner can be a major hassle. Especially if you’re with a group of people with differing tastes. So, what if you could just pick a neighborhood and price range in any given city, wave a magic wand and make restaurant suggestions appear? Well, you kind of can, actually. It’s the Urbanspoon App.

The Urbanspoon App lets you pick your parameters and then shake the iPhone to come up with a random selection. It looks basically like a slot machine and is almost more fun because you don’t lose any money just by playing. Of course, you can also browse for restaurants by neighborhood, price range, or cuisine type if you’re not into the game. Check out the App in the App store.

 Tap Tap Revenge iPhone application

Tapulous has issued an update to their Tap Tap Revenge rhythm game which includes working push notifications, despite the fact that iPhone OS 3.0 isn’t officially available for two more days.

It certainly isn’t the most creative use of background notifications (the messages only pop up when you’re challenged by another player), and we’re already wondering how, when all kinds of apps have this capability, the iPhone’s exceedingly simple notification system will scale at some point.

OS 3.0 users can give the free app a try now, but keep in mind that we’ll probably see more than a few push-equipped apps rolling out in the next few days, as we’d imagine Apple will want to have a few high-profile 3.0-capable downloads available at launch to show off the new capability.

We’ll report new apps that use this as they’re released/updated.

The Star Defense release date has to be drawing near, we can feel it. We have been getting fed a regular dose of screenshots and gameplay videos for some time now, but we still have no official release date for this highly anticipated tower defense game. To tide you over for just a little while longer, ngmoco has released a brand new Star Defense strategic tower placement video.

The latest Star Defense gameplay video embedded below shows players how to strategically place towers to successfully defend against waves of the incoming S’rath aliens. The video is narrated by ngmoco’s Mary Jane Irwin.

Hopefully the next time we have something to say about Star Defense, it will include a release date and price. Cross your fingers!

Hit The Streets Of New York In TaxiDrive

We have seen a recent surge of big, time consuming games for the iPhone like The Sims 3 and Return to Mysterious Island. They are great games in their own right, but the iPhone is a mobile device after all and sometimes we just want to play a quick casual game while on-the-go. Conveniently, Steffen from syncRage has informed us about their new casual game TaxiDrive that should help you waste some of those extra seconds you may have.

TaxiDrive is a simple casual game that requires you to hit the streets of New York in your taxi cab in an attempt to generate as much income as possible. The game uses a top-down perspective to help you easily navigate the streets. You must head to all corners of the city to pick up and then drop off your passengers. TaxiDrive allows you to control your taxi two different ways: one being a tap and drag method that allows you to control the path of your taxi instantly, and the other is a single tap control that chooses the best route for you. You will have to constantly alter the path of your taxi to avoid the traffic because as the game progresses, the traffic picks up.

TaxiDrive features three unlockable maps with demanding challenges, the ability to gain more taxis to extend the game by wracking up cash, and a local high score list. The developers intend on issuing an update very soon that will add more maps.

TaxiDrive is available in the App Store for the introductory price of $.99.

 Kindle for iPhone 1.1 released

If you are into the whole e-book thing and have been annoyed at the few glitches in the iPhone version of the software, go and download the latest update. It’s definitely worth it for those folks.

Here’s the list of changes, taken from the product page:

• Read in portrait or landscape mode
• Pinch to zoom images in books
• Select alternate background and text colors to improve

reading comfort in low light conditions.
• Tap on either side of the screen or flick to turn pages

Many of these were the primary complaints about the original app, especially the ability to read in landscape mode (how could they not include that?).

Great list of additions, and the update is free in the App Store right now. It sounds as if reading e-books on your iPhone just got easier.

Documents To Go for iPhone Submitted for App Store Approval

Good news for all those still looking for an ‘Office suite’ type app for the iPhone, and don’t care for QuickOffice: Documents To Go – a very popular solution in this category on the Palm platform for awhile now and one that many have been waiting to see come to the iPhone who use it for document writing/editing, has now been submitted to the Apple for approval – and Dataviz (who make it) hope it will be out in a few days or so. Knowing Apple, it could be a week, but let’s hope not.

Up to now, there’s only been one office suite app available for the iPhone – Quickoffice – and thus far it has not got rave reviews from many users, and it is priced at a rather high price (for the App Store) of $19.99.

Dataviz has not yet revealed what the price for Documents To Go (DTG) will be, but hopefully they’ll launch it at a lower price than Quickoffice. They could capture this market for themselves, assuming they’re smart enough to price it competitively.

Quickoffice Word and Excel Office Suite For The iPhone Now Available

If you are interested in an app for the iPhone/Touch that can edit both Microsoft Word and Excel documents along with file sharing and content management capabilities, Quickoffice is now available via the App Store for $20.

This is basically an abridged version of Office for the iPhone, which could useful for a variety of applications: editing documents, typing out new ones, and doing Excel sheets without dragging open a laptop. Will include copy/paste functionality too. Great for on the go presentations.

Comments on various forums think the price is too high, but hey, people were clamoring for this functionality months ago, so compared to the full on version of Office, $20 is a bargain, it seems. But the bar seems to have been set rather low for App Store pricing it seems, and many have said they’d rather piece together various free apps to do this sort of work. To each their own, we suppose.

Airfoil Speakers Touch streams audio to iPhone, iPod touch

Rogue Amoeba is known in the Mac community for Airfoil, the $25 Mac and PC application that allows any audio to be streamed from a host computer to an AirPort Express or Apple TV. It was an innovation at the time that was much celebrated.

Rogue Amoeba has now announced the release of Airfoil Speakers Touch, which allows audio to be streamed from a host directly to an iPhone or iPod touch. While Airfoil Speakers Touch is a free application, it does still of course require the full version of Airfoil running on the host computer in order to function properly.

Here’s more about the app from the creators:
“With Airfoil Speakers Touch, you can send any audio from your Mac or PC, straight to your iPhone or iPod Touch! Just connect your device to your local Wifi network, then open up Airfoil on your Mac or Windows machine, and start transmitting. You’ll be able to send audio from iTunes, RealPlayer, and even web-based sources like Pandora and Last.fm. Now, if your Mac or Windows machine can play it, you can hear it on your iPhone or iPod Touch!”

Is Hulu coming to the iphone / Touch?

Blog Silicon Alley Insider is reporting that a dedicated Hulu application is indeed on its way. An iPhone app should be here in just a few months.

Is Hulu coming to the iphone / Touch?

Hulu has been busy denying the rumors that an iPhone version of Hulu was coming. SAI says the application will work over Wi-Fi and AT&T’s 3G network, meaning that users will be able to view programming anywhere with a fast data connection. The upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 software update, which lets developers bake streaming media into their applications. For Hulu, this means that the advertising could be stuck into the mobile stream and that users would be able to watch videos without leaving the application.

Users of Hulu can watch ad-supported, full-length television shows and movies on their personal computers for free, instead of paying Apple to download a copy for offline viewing. If such an app were available on the iPhone, it would also offer portable TV and movie watching, something not yet offered in Apple’s own mobile iTunes app, which is limited to video podcasts.

ProPrompter for iPhone - the ultimate mobile teleprompter

Teleprompters are one of those systems that’s seeded in old, expensive video traditions, mandating superfluous equipment to achieve something absurdly simple to do in 2009. The ProPrompter agrees with this philosophy.

Using the aluminum ProPrompter Wing, an iPhone or iPod touch can be mounted to any tripod to work alongside small to midsized camcorders for a teleprompter system that’s readable from 15 feet away. The $99 (introductory price) system is coupled a free software available in the App Store.

Of course, as the company is catering to the pro video crowd, there’s also a ProPrompter ProMag rig that features a more studio-traditional setup including an anti-reflection hood and beam splitting glass. That’ll run you $695 (introductory). Well, not you. I mean somebody with a lot of money to spend on big-time teleprompter equipment.

Nerdy App of the Day: Star Trek Phaser

Apparently there’s a new Star Trek film due to be released soon. I’m not a huge fan, but this app caught my eye as being kinda cool – Star Trek Phaser.

I guess the hype and promotion train for the new movie will be gaining momentum soon, and we’ll see more App Store entries soon.

In the meantime, despite not being a big Star Trek fan personally, I thought this one looked like fun. I’ve seen Star Trek and know what a phaser sounds like – so I thought I’d give it a shot, especially as it’s free.

It does more than just show a phaser on its screen and make some authentic sounding phaser firing noises - it also lets you play shooting games. You can go one player against the machine, so to speak, or two player if you have friends within the same WiFi network, and submit your high scores and see where you stand amongst your global phaser-blasting peers.

Whether or not you’re a major Star Trek fan, if you’re even vaguely familiar with the show or movies and what a phaser sounds like, this is a pretty good free novelty app.

You can find Star Trek Phaser in the App Store now, and it’s a free app.
