Nokia renews its chipset development strategy
Nokia will however continue to develop its leading modem technology*, which includes protocol software and related digital design for WCDMA/GSM and its evolution. Nokia will then license this modem technology to its chipset manufacturers, who will use it in the chipsets they develop and produce for Nokia and - if they so decide - in the chipsets they produce for the open market.
This licensing and multisourcing strategy will allow Nokia to broaden its pool of chipset suppliers and leverage external innovation to support its wide range of products. It will also allow Nokia to focus on its core competence in modem technology and invest in R&D areas besides radio technology, such as in software to power internet services.
"This is a pragmatic move in the face of an increasingly complex technology environment," said Niklas Savander, Executive Vice President, Nokia Technology Platforms. "Companies in this industry need to focus on areas where they can add value and partner with others where it makes sense. We believe that our renewed strategy will allow us to concentrate on developing core chipset technologies, while increasing our R&D efficiencies and improving our agility in a fast-moving marketplace."
Based on this renewed strategy, Nokia is now working with four chipset suppliers. Texas Instruments continues to be a broad scope supplier across all protocols, Broadcom has been chosen as a supplier in EDGE, Infineon Technologies as a supplier in GSM, and STMicroelectronics as a supplier in 3G.
* A modem converts the digital language of a chip to the analogue language of radio, allowing one device to communicate with another over radio signals.

Nokia and STMicroelectronics plan deeper ties in 3G technology development
The multifaceted agreement will enable STMicroelectronics to design and manufacture 3G chipsets based on Nokia's modem technologies, energy management and RF (radio frequency) technology and deliver complete solutions to Nokia and the open market.
At the same time, Nokia and STMicroelectronics are negotiating Nokia's IC operations transfer plan and accordingly, in order to reorganize and effect the planned competence transfer Nokia will start the personnel consultation process required by local regulations with its personnel representatives. The transfer is anticipated to concern approximately 200 Nokia employees in Finland and the UK, and it is estimated to take place during the fourth quarter 2007.
Nokia has also awarded ST a design win of an advanced 3G HSPA ((high-speed packet access) chipset supporting high data rates, which would be the first contribution of the acquired IC design operations. This design win represents ST's first win of a complete 3G chipset.
The collaboration between Nokia and STMicroelectronics is in line with the renewal of Nokia's chipset strategy. Nokia will continue to develop its leading-edge modem technology, which includes protocol software and related digital design for WCDMA/GSM and its evolution. This modem technology will then be licensed to chipset manufacturers who will develop and produce chipsets for Nokia. These manufacturers will also be able to produce and sell to the open market chipsets based on Nokia's modem technology.
"Nokia's strategy will be to collaborate with its semiconductor partners for full chipset solutions," said Niklas Savander, Executive Vice President, Technology Platforms, Nokia. "We have worked with STMicroelectronics for many years and the company is a perfect partner for this expanded collaboration."
"We are excited about the possibilities that the intended IC technology transfer will bring us," said Tommi Uhari, Executive Vice President and General Manager of ST's Mobile, Multimedia & Communications Group. "The intended IC technology transfer, with the world-class engineering skills and licensing of Nokia's world-leading 3G modem technologies, will enhance our relationship with Nokia and will improve our competitive position."
The effectiveness of the licensing agreement remains conditional on the completion of the contemplated transactions.

Motorola Unveils MOTOMAGX Mobile Linux Platform
LINUXWORLD – SAN FRANCISCO – 7 August 2007 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced a significant step in its commitment to mobile Linux® and rich experience creation by introducing MOTOMAGX, its next generation mobile Linux platform. Building on the global success of Motorola's earlier Linux-based platforms, MOTOMAGX lays the foundation to deliver new levels of openness, flexibility and support for third-party applications on Motorola mobile devices.
A leader in mobile Linux, Motorola has sold more than 9 million Linux-based handsets worldwide -- and this is just the beginning. In the next few years, up to 60% of Motorola’s handset portfolio is expected to be based on Linux, with the MOTOMAGX platform playing a key role in supporting this strategy. Offering unmatched innovation driven by a robust developer ecosystem, Motorola has chosen Linux to deliver the rich, new experiences that consumers crave. This is evident in the first products based on the MOTOMAGX platform: the music-optimized MOTOROKR Z6 and the Motorola RAZR2 V8 handsets, available now in select markets worldwide. The RAZR2 V8 will be Motorola’s first Linux-based device bound for North America, representing another milestone in the company’s global mobile Linux leadership.
“At Motorola, we know that software is just as important as hardware -- through the introduction of our MOTOMAGX platform, we are reinforcing our firm commitment to Linux and empowering our developer community to innovate with us in exciting new ways,” said Alain Mutricy, senior vice president, platform technology, Motorola Mobile Devices business.
New Developer Tools = New Mobile Experiences
Motorola’s MOTOMAGX platform is designed to support a broad array of content created by third-party developers. Today, MOTOMAGX supports applications developed in Java ME™, with plans to introduce new WebUI (featuring web technology to enable widgets and Web 2.0 experiences) and native Linux application environments in upcoming releases. These three application environments, combined with the relevant tools available through Motorola's MOTODEV Studio integrated development environment, will help enable MOTODEV developers to innovate and accelerate time to market for their applications.
To further enable developers to take advantage of application development opportunities in mobile, Motorola announced today a global series of MOTODEV Summits -- exclusive, one-day events that offer developers technical expertise, practical advice, guidance, and a sneak peek at the next generation of Motorola devices, platforms and technology -- including MOTOMAGX.
“MOTOMAGX, when paired with the tools and support from our MOTODEV Developer network, provides a powerful platform for innovation -- making it easier and faster for developers to create new applications for our mobile devices,” said Christy Wyatt, vice president, ecosystem and market development, Motorola. “This opens exciting possibilities for what tomorrow's mobile applications will be able to do and the new device experiences they will support."
Developers interested in creating applications for the MOTOMAGX platform using Java ME can do so today by downloading the MOTODEV Studio for Java ME application development environment at www.motorola.com/developer. WebUI and native Linux plug-ins for MOTODEV Studio are expected to be available to select developers by the end of Q4 2007.
“Motorola is helping to mobilize Web 2.0 content and services through the introduction of their WebUI application environment within MOTOMAGX,” said Ojas Rege, vice president of mobile products, Yahoo!. “We believe these types of platforms will enable developers to deliver compelling applications that play across an array of Motorola devices and help to continue to grow the marketplace for innovative mobile Internet services."
Travis Boatman, vice president of worldwide studios at EA Mobile said, “As the global leader in mobile games, EA Mobile prioritizes applications that can be used across the industry’s most common platforms. Motorola is leading in mobile Linux and we applaud their launch of the MOTOMAGX platform with its associated application environments and toolsets. The DoD also mandates the use of continuous wireless intrusion protection measures for tracking the location of thousands of wireless clients in real-time.
Motorola is one of the few vendors to offer advanced forensics reporting that provides visibility into incidents that may have occurred weeks or months earlier to help identify and correct wireless security vulnerabilities.
Similar to any government COTS WLAN deployment, retail, healthcare, financial and wireless carrier businesses are under growing pressure to ensure that customer and patient information is secure across their wireless networks. A majority of these institutions are implementing the same standards mandated by the U.S. government.
"We are happy to work with Motorola on FIPS 140-2 and Common Criteria validation of Motorola RF and wireless switch solutions," said Eugene Polulyakh, lab manager at Aspect Labs. "During the FIPS 140-2 and Common Criteria certification process the product undergoes advanced and comprehensive security analysis, vulnerability and penetration testing. The product internals and its source code are scrutinized by security experts to assure strong security defenses and compliance with advanced
cryptographic standards. Achieving FIPS 140-2 and Common Criteria certifications is an important security milestone that adds significant value to an enterprise solution."
Motorola Enterprise WLAN equipment can help secure data all the way from client device to the application without additional investment in additional hardware or modules. At the point of data exchange with the wireless client device, Motorola uses the IEEE 802.11i wireless security standard, which provides data authentication and encryption using the AES-CCM cryptographic algorithm.
Motorola's RFS7000 RF Switch and WS5100 Wireless Switch are part of the end-to-end enterprise WLAN product suite, enabling enterprise mobility indoors. Products in the Enterprise WLAN portfolio include thin, full-function and mobile mesh access points, wireless switches and RF switches that can manage up to 3,000 access points. In addition to Wi-Fi hardware, Enterprise WLAN is part of Motorola's MOTOwi4(TM) portfolio of innovative wireless broadband solutions and services that complement and
complete IP networks. Delivering IP coverage to virtually all spaces both indoors and outdoors, the MOTOwi4 portfolio includes fixed broadband, mesh, broadband over powerline, WiMAX and Enterprise WLAN solutions for private and public networks.
Motorola expects to receive final FIPS 140-2 and Common Criteria EAL4 validation in 2008.

"You have Reached Your Destination": Nokia 6110 Navigator guides Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman across the 'Long Way Down' finish line
Since those first miles in May 2007 in John O'Groats, Scotland, they have ridden through twenty countries, including Libya, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Rwanda. They have encountered and negotiated blinding sandstorms, searing temperatures, challenging border crossings and extreme riding conditions.
In the struggle to keep on schedule, staying on course and staying in touch has been essential and Nokia has played a pivotal role providing the Nokia 6110 for GPS navigation, map checking, web searches, documenting video, and those all important calls back home.
"The Long Way Down has been an amazing journey and it has been a real privilege to be able to experience these diverse and beautiful places. We've had the opportunity to see such different ways of life to ours and have travelled to remote places very few people have access to. The sense of freedom and exploration has been incredible," says McGregor.
"We were both up for an adventure and Africa has certainly given us that," says Charley. "There have been times when it has been unbelievably hard going but that has been countered by amazing riding and extraordinary people. Africa is a continent full of undiscovered wonder and we both feel incredibly lucky we've been able to experience this together and to have survived with some brilliant stories to tell."
The Nokia 6110 Navigator brings together GPS (Global Positioning System) and AGPS (Assisted Global Positioning System) with always-on mobile connectivity in a feature-rich, compact device. The phone features video calling and sharing functionality, a 2 megapixel camera and a large and bright 2,2" QVGA screen, offering up to 16 million colors. The phone has a talk-time of up to 3,5 hours and a standby time of 11 days.
