Alliance bundles standards-based hardware and software solutions for next-generation networking applications
TEMPE, Ariz. and ALAMEDA, Calif. – 6 August 2007 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and Wind River Systems (NASDAQ: WIND) today announced that they have formed a strategic alliance designed to provide integrated AdvancedTCA® (ATCA®) and MicroTCATM communication platforms with Carrier Grade Linux and VxWorks runtimes.
Through this agreement, Motorola’s embedded communications computing business and Wind River will work together to deliver bundled hardware and software solutions for next-generation networking designs for the telecom, military and aerospace, medical and industrial automation industries. The companies also will provide joint customer support, as well as collaborate on product development and on driving joint value for industry initiatives such as OpenSAF high availability software, virtualization technologies and development environments for multicore processors.
“Collaborating with an industry leader like Wind River demonstrates Motorola’s commitment to extend the benefits of leading-edge, multicore technologies such as MicroTCA and AdvancedTCA to our joint customers,” said Stephen Dow, vice president and general manager, Embedded Communications Computing, Motorola, Inc. “It also enables us to offer our customers a choice of the best components from third party software providers, illustrating the strength and maturity of the xTCA ecosystem.”
“We look forward to strengthening our relationship with a respected industry leader such as Motorola. Through our alliance, we expect to provide our customers with access to leading edge technology as well as a simplified path for them to adopt COTS hardware and software solutions,” said Ken Klein, chief executive officer and president of Wind River. “Implementing fully tested, integrated, and validated solutions from Motorola and Wind River will help our joint customers to accelerate application development for next generation Linux and VxWorks networking platforms.”
The first bundled solution, a MicroTCA-based COTS solution with Wind River Carrier Grade Linux, is now available through leading global distributors Arrow Electronics, Inc. and Avnet Applied Computing Solutions. Other solutions including the ATCA-9301 Cavium Octeon-based solution are expected to be available later this year.
