Palm's AT&T launch pushed back to summer?

Palm att

Palm is not exactly in te best of financial situations considering their flagship device, the Pre, failed to become a national phenomenon as they had hoped. However, a ray of hope came for the company when talks about bringing the devices to AT&T arose. The Pre and Pixi were in fact rumored to be hitting AT&T as early as next month but that may have been halted.

Reports have arose that say AT&T has found some problems with the Pre and Pixi and are delaying the launch of the devices until June or July. And, to make things even worse, AT&T has reportedly decreased their initial order from Palm and cut back on their marketing budget for the two devices.

Don’t worry Palm, I think the Pre is cool.

Palm webOS Now Arriving On Your Phone via Over-the-Air Update

The latest update to Palm webOS is now arriving on your phone via an over-the-air update. The update is now available for customers on the Sprint network in the US and on the O2 UK, O2 DE, O2 Ireland, and Movistar networks in Europe. The update has been released for customers using the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus on Verizon Wireless. The update is expected to be available for Palm webOS phones on other networks soon. Highlights of the latest update include:

* The ability to capture, edit, and share video: Not only can you easily shoot video footage from your Palm webOS phone, but you can also make quick edits and upload your footage to YouTube or Facebook (or send them via email or MMS) with just a couple of taps (see video above).
* Get more done faster: The Calendar, Phone, Messaging, and Email apps have all been enhanced with new features to simplify common tasks (many based on feedback from our customers). For example, in the Calendar app, you can now dial a number that appears in the subject of an appointment. In the Email app, you can now sort by date, sender, and subject. In the Phone app, the Call log offers more options to easily connect to a contact (such as via SMS). And there are some new shortcuts for zipping from one app to another (for example, moving from a chat view to a phone call with that person). You¹ll also see improved performance in these apps.
* Enhanced notifications: The LED in the gesture area now lights up and pulses if you have a notification (even when the screen is off). You can also customize notification sounds in Messaging, Email (on an account-by-account basis), and Calendar. And there are new notification sounds in the ringtones library to give your more customization options for your alert.

See more details of the Palm webOS 1.4 update in action at http://www.palm.com/us/products/software/update/index.html. Your phone will automatically update within a few days once Palm webOS 1.4 is available on your carrier. You can also trigger the update using the Updates app.

Bell Canada launching the Palm Pre on August 27

It didn’t happen in June, and neither in July, but it will definitely happen this month: Bell Mobility and Palm have just announced the release of Palm Pre across Canada, starting August 27.

The long-awaited webOS smartphone will cost $199.95 with a 3-yr agreement, or $599.95 free of contract (a minimum 500 MB data plan is required).

As you can see, the pricing is similar to Sprint’s offering in the US – of course, the main difference is that Sprint has 2-yr contracts instead of 3-yr ones.

Canadian customers can already preorder the Palm Pre, via Bell’s official website.

The main features of Palm Pre include: 320 x 480 pixels touchscreen display, sliding QWERTY keyboard, Palm Synergy, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3.2MP camera, 3.5mm headset jack and 8GB of internal memory.

Palm Announces Expanded Mojo SDK Availability

Palm has announced their new early access program for developers interested in creating applications for the Palm webOSTM. The early access program is an opportunity for developers to test-drive and provide feedback on the Palm MojoTM SDK prior to its public release.

Admission to the program is by application, which will admit a small group of developers to start and gradually increase the size of the program as the tools mature. Palm would like to accept everyone, however they want to make sure that they can provide a solid development experience and attentive developer support before they scale up. Palm is eager to get the SDK into developers’ hands and will expand the program as quickly as we can. For more information visit http://developer.palm.com/faq.html.
