Knock Knock! It’s The Teddy Calling

With the world closing in on Nano technology, smaller and more potent gadgets keep hitting the market from time to time. In such a scenario, something that reverses the tide mostly meets a sore eye but then the Japanese have their own way of thinking and they really don’t care about the world. They adore some real bizarre gadgets and the direct entrant into that category is the Kuma Phone from Willcom. Kuma means a bear in Japanese and thus the Kuma phone is a bear phone. Yes, you got it right, it is a phone within a teddy bear and you can make calls using that bear. The tail acts as the button that helps one answer and disconnect whilst the four paws act as receptors for speed dials. Since Willcom is a PHS mobile service provider, the SIM card lies within the teddy bear. Heavily popular at the 2008 Good Design Expo, it is now going into mass production with a price tag of not more than $500. Crazy how the Japanese are ready to shell that much for a teddy bear phone!

Icono Concept Phone: It is about emotions and iconic gestures

I don’t know whether Zinc Chan’s Icono will have any takers in the practical world but Chan deserve accolades for wedding iconic gestures with technology. Although Icono is a phone but the design has very little similarity with the standard phones we are used to. The phone is divided into two parts, earphone and microphone. To make these two parts become a complete whole for the sake of communication, the user has to use the hand in the iconic gesture associated with the telephone. However, the weirdest part of the Icono is that instead of dialing numbers you have to dial an animated path on the touchscreen of the device. Is it easier for one to associate people with unique patterns? Zinc Chan, I think is the best person to answer this question.

SmartBerry: Now children have their own smartphones

Children look at parents for inspiration, so if parents are tech savvy then why should kids be satisfied with a Barbie or a toy car? The tech age kids also want the real things and keeping their demands in mind, Bandai has launched a smart phone tool for kids, dubbed the SmartBerry. The pink color of SmartBerry makes it amply clear that its main target is little girls in the 6 to 9 age group. Just like the adult smart device, SmartBerry is a touch screen phone with a slider keypad. It has instant messaging service, three chat rooms, digital business card, games, planners, calculator and alarm. Gifting the child a ¥10,290 ($94) swanky device is the perfect way to spoil her.

Basic Tab cell phone: All looks here!

You want the latest in technology then just switch to Nokia or Apple’s page. This bit is about a cell phone that makes no excuses about sacrificing features for form, and we love it as much for the honesty as for the pretensions. The Basic Tab phone has been designed for Resonates 08 to compliment our dressing sense, not fulfill our technological aspirations. Physical traits are worked upon at the cost of technological characteristics! Does it make a penny worth of difference to our liking; no it doesn’t. The front of the phone is a gorgeous black screen with little else to draw attention. This humongous screen rests upon a metal slab to add volume. The camera located at the back also makes claim more as a fashion accessory than anything else and is designed as something located on a designer handbag than a tech device. Tech junkies move over, Basic Tab will put you at shame for having to pass over so sleek a device.

CulArt mobile phone - A true amalgamation of culture and art!

Incorporating art and culture into the ubiquitous mobile phone might sound a new concept but the evolution cycle of the mobile phone cannot be devoid of the artistic spirituality as CulArt hopes to build into its touchscreen phone. The specs of the CulArt mobile phone include a 3-megapixel camera, 2.7-inch full-touch screen, Bluetooth remote control with 5 way jog keys. As for the artistic and cultural elements of the phone, it would have the ridge of the mountain on the side view, rock-crag on the rear view and wood/archaic TV on the side view of the phone display. Will we ever be able to see this piece of art and culture in mobile phone in reality?

MS may still have a Windows Zune Phone up their sleeve

We’re changing the way we work with hardware vendors to ensure that we can provide complete experiences with absolutely no compromises. We’ll do the same with phones—providing choice as we work to create great end-to-end experiences.
Of course it doesn’t say anything about a Zune phone per se, but for the optimist, even this says a lot and seems to be quite enough to keep the rumors fired up for the time being.

WAVE Interaction mobile phone concept

Taking visual function and efficiency of a cellphone up another notch, the WAVE Interaction mobile phone keeps you in the know always by displaying key information like battery condition, weather information, timers, etc. on the exterior of the clamshell design. By replacing the small LCD with a full-cover display, the design also makes it easy for users to use and respond to information much better than with traditional cellphone designs.

By using arty and tasteful patterns to display information, the concept enhances user interaction and aesthetic experience by a generous degree and that too within the limitations of a clam shell design.

Nakamiki - Cell phone for kids

Provided by Ajoka, a Chinese manufacturer of low cost small GSM cell phones for kids is easy to use and has an appealing bear shape.
It offers some cool features such as the possibility to audio monitor the environment where your child is, at any time, and the kid can use SOS buttons to send preset messages to 3 receivers. The level of radiation is low so it won’t affect child’s health. A SAR of 0.208W/kg is way below 1.6W/Kg, the International average SAR value.
In addition, the external material used to build the children's cell phone is non-toxic and it has rounded margins so your kid can’t get injured accidentally.
The manufacturer didn’t add any display, to avoid fraud messages and to not distract the child from learning activities at school, and added just 4 speed dials to minimize calling costs. To make a call the kid has to press one of the 4 buttons depending on the person he/she wants to contact, and parents can set number from the family members, Police, teacher and others.

Nakamiki is maybe the best cell phone for kids and costs around $70. It is available on different markets worldwide.

Prepaid Disposable Phones

Hop-On is one of the world’s famous wireless phones and accessories developer but also the first prepaid disposable phones manufacturer. It also provides software for cell phones so you can stream live interactive feed from legal jurisdictions to play poker, blackjack, roulette and baccarat.
Recently the company launched the Hop1800 model worldwide. This cell phone is the world’s cheapest, available at just $10 in the United States. These prepaid disposable phones can be used only for making phone calls.
It’s funny to hear it is promoted as the $10 Anti-iPhone as it doesn’t have a display, but its main features include dual-band support, 4 hours talk time, 150 hours standby, polyphonic ringtones support, vibration, and measures just 96.6 x 41.6 x 14 mm at 77 grams. In addition it uses the Infineon sound chip for high audio quality and call stability.
About the design we have to mention its tactile numeric keypad with Braille markings and the fact that it can be co-branded.
“Though the iPhone is an amazing device, I challenge anyone to make a call faster than with the HOP1800,” said Hop-On CEO Peter Michaels. “With the cost of living and roaming fees going through the roof, the HOP1800 is also the perfect iPhone traveling companion. Just buy a local SIM card and you can use the HOP1800 with over 40 domestic wireless carriers,” Michaels said.
Hop-On disposable cell phones cost just 10$ in US and if you return it for recycling you receive $5 back just to Keep it Green.
