ASUS, iRiver to Sell Unlocked Smartphones in U.S.

iRiver's single GSM phone, targeted for the end of this year, has more than a little of the iPhone to it. Like the iPhone, the "iRiver GSM phone" (they don't have a flashy name yet) has a big, 3-inch, 480x272 touch screen and no keypad; you navigate by touching, flicking or swiping the screen. The icons in the Linux-based phone's UI even look like the iPhone's.
The phone also appears to have 4-Gbytes of flash storage, music and video players with Rhapsody music support, a two-megapixel camera with camcorder, an Adobe Flash player, GPS and mobile TV of some variety. The phone's software was very unfinished, however. Even the wireless connections aren't fixed: it might have Wi-Fi or might not. One thing's clear, though – it will work on high-speed 3G cellular networks like the one run by AT&T. (As a GSM phone, it won't work with Sprint or Verizon.)
"It would be ridiculous for the phone to be 2G or 2.5G at this time," said iRiver spokesman Owen Kwon. Kwon added that the phone will be "more affordable" than the iPhone.
Asus' phones are much closer to market – the first one is just two weeks away, according to Asus spokesman Charlton Ho. Asus already makes phones for Asia, but the GPS-powered Windows Mobile 6 Professional phone known as the P527 will be its first full-scale launch in the U.S.
The P527 is a relatively wide, candy-bar style handset with a SirfStar III GPS running Asus' own mapping and driving directions application. It's based on a 200-MHz TI OMAP 850 processor and has a 2.6-inch, 320x240 display. The phone packs fast Wi-Fi 802.11g and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, but slow USB 1.1 for connection to PCs. It's a quad-band EDGE phone, so it's ready for AT&T and T-Mobile.
The P527 comes with all the usual Windows Mobile applications, such as Pocket Office. But Asus has also added an FM radio, business card recognizing application, backup program and RSS reader. They also wrote their own power management software which should help extend the device's battery life. The phone will sell for $499, Ho said.
"The iPhone is changing peoples' perspectives," Ho said. "People are now more willing to pay for their phones."
The P527 will be followed by the Galaxy Mini, a more "woman-focused" smartphone that's small, slim and pink, Ho said. The Galaxy Mini will run the latest version of Microsoft's Windows Mobile software and ASUS' GPS system, and should be available by the end of March, Ho said.
If ASUS' phones are successful here, they may bring in other models such as a Lamborghini-branded phone, he said. ASUS makes a Lamborghini-branded laptop that's currently available in the US.

McAfee Delivers on Triple Play Promise With Mobile Security Offering

SANTA CLARA, Calif., /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE) today announced that McAfee® VirusScan® Mobile, which is included in McAfee's Triple Play offer, is now available for download at http://us.mcafee.com. McAfee currently offers market-leading defense for consumers' PCs and Internet experiences, and the new mobile security component protects against threats that originate from e-mail, instant messages and multimedia downloads in various mobile devices.
Consumers who purchase McAfee Total Protection or McAfee Internet Security Suite get McAfee VirusScan Mobile at no additional charge.
"Mobile Internet use, which now involves everything from e-mail to payments and mobile security, will become of greater importance as threats evolve," said Todd Gebhart, senior vice president and general manager, McAfee Consumer, Mobile and Small Business. "While not yet widespread, McAfee Avert® Labs has identified 450 different mobile threat variants, including viruses and spyware that can threaten devices and personal information. McAfee VirusScan® Mobile is proactive protection, providing customers with the peace of mind that comes from knowing they are protected today against the mobile threats of the future."
McAfee VirusScan Mobile is designed from the ground up to provide mobile protection. It guards against threats and protects the device at entry points, including SMS, MMS and e-mail. It automatically scans incoming and outgoing data for malicious code and continuously monitors and analyzes mobile data and files. VirusScan Mobile also seamlessly interacts with McAfee's Avert Labs for the latest protection updates.
Infections from mobile malware can occur through message attachments, application downloads, Bluetooth communication and PC synchronization. Hackers are increasingly using sophisticated social engineering tactics to trick users to confirm the installation of mobile malware and public mobile Internet sites have also been used to propagate malicious software.
Examples of recent mobile threats include viruses like "Duts" and "Xrove". "Duts" attached its viral code to executable files and proved how a virus can spread within a Windows Mobile device. "Xrove" demonstrated how a Windows mobile device can get infected via PC synchronization. Mobile variants of spyware and phishing over text messaging have been identified as well.
Currently, McAfee VirusScan Mobile supports Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone and Windows Mobile 6 Standard Edition devices. Through the "My Account page" at http://us.mcafee.com, McAfee customers can view the most up-to-date list of supported devices, which includes such popular mobile devices as the Motorola Q9h.

Tons of new Nokia N82 live pics
i think Nokia N82 very cool. And what's your Impression and feeling ?
Korea first country in the world to conduct a program to Cure Mobile Phone Addicts
The schools will have cell phone lockers, where students voluntarily put their phones preventing their use during class time. Feeling nervous without a mobile phone and having it at all times, is typical of many young people in Korea, who could be said to be suffering from so-called mobile phone addiction.
Korea has one of the world's most advanced mobile phone systems and highest quality services. However, the wide use of the handsets has resulted in addiction, especially among teenagers, with cell phones dominating their daily lives.

JCB TOUGHPHONE (Sonim XP1)

The TOUGHPHONE is rated to at least IP52 specifications* which doesn't mean much to us, but it does mean that the handset is very resistant to dust, shock, moisture and impact. The handset should survive being dropped onto a concrete floor while in use, and it can also cope with temperatures ranging from -20 degrees to +40 degrees celsius to. It's pretty clear that the TOUGHPHONE actually is a tough as it looks.
The distributors of the JCB TOUGHPHONE are pitching the handset at trades such as construction, farming, transport and any other application where robustness is useful. It should also survive most outdoor leisure pursuits, or possibly even a trip down to the pub.

There's a glare and scratch resistant screen, and the TOUGHPHONE also has a very loud Dual Speaker phone for use in noisy environments, it has a WAP browser and Bluetooth. The standard sales package also includes a USB cable and belt clip. It's a pretty large handset at 113 x 50 x 22mm, mostly down to the chunky design. The TOUGHPHONE isn't all work and no play though - there are some fun JCB style graphics and an exclusive ringtone that sounds like a JCB digger starting up (although this is possibly less useful if you happen to work with diggers!)
One of the TOUGHPHONE's other strong points is its Push-To-Talk support (PTT or PoC). If you have a tariff that supports it, the TOUGHPHONE can be used as walkie-talkie and it can be integrated with other PTT/PoC solutions.
The JCB TOUGHPHONE is actually manufactured by Sonim Technologies as the Sonim XP1. Sonim aren't some nameless third-tier manufacturer, they are actually specialists in enterprise and industrial communications systems.
On the negative side, the screen is only 128 x 160 pixels in resolution, and the TOUGHPHONE lacks a camera or multimedia capabilities. What you do get though is an extremely rugged and durable handset, backed by a no quibble three year guarantee.
The JCB TOUGHPHONE will be availabe from Phones4U during November (where it is free on a contract of £25/month or more), and also Speedy Hire and Plumb Center stores with other retailers following from February 2008 onwards. We also understand that Vodafone themselves will be carrying their own variant of the Sonim XP1 during 2008. The Sonim XP1 is also currently available SIM free for around £200 / €300.
Note: Sonim (who make the phone) say that it's rated IP52, Data Select (who distribute the phone) say IP54, and the JCB publicity leaflet says IP53. Whichever it is, the rating strictly speaking gives limited dust ingress protection and some protection against water spray.

Sony Ericsson К770 - The Cyber Power

Now let’s see what it’s where on the slim bar phone,
Apart from the display the front side has video calls camera which is being foxed in the right side. The speaker is visible on the centre of the phone. Sonly Ericsson has done certain changes in Keypad, the joystick is replaced by the a comfortable D pad and other keys are also big enough to avoid any kind of confusion or mistakes while dialling. The back of the phone obviously like every phone there is a camera on the upper side along with the LED flash and mirror. And thank heavens the camera also has a protective lens cover to save it from getting damaged. The loudspeaker grill is located at the bottom of the back side is the loudspeaker grill which is also usual, The backside also has Sony Ericsson logo. The left edge of the handset has fast port for attaching the chargers and other peripherals which has become a common feature in Sony Ericsson sets these days. The top edges features the On and Off key which is although not blend seamlessly in the design of the phone but is too small to be pressed accidentally. The bottom edge also has a sliding release key to open the back cover. The left edge of the phone features a dual volume key and a Camera shutter key which unlike the on/off key blend seamlessly in the design of the phone. But the Sony Ericsson K770 also has some disadvantages like it has no EDGE. It’s cemra is nice and all but it records video in the ancient QCIF (176 x 144 pixels) resolution only. It has place for MicroSD memory slot but its internal memory is just 16 MB. It has Led flash but not Xenon one also there is no BestPic shooting mode.
Following are the features, specifications and the disadvantages of the Sony Ericsson K770:
1. It is laced with a 3 megapixel auto focus camera with LED flash, but no Xenon flash
2. Memory card slot with hot-swap support, but only 16GB of internal memory
3. It offers 3G support with video calls
4. It also features multi-tasking support
5. It has walkman-style music player for the music lovers
6. FM radio is also there for the Fm buffs
7.It has TrackID support
8. It has Bluetooth (with A2DP)
9. It has Bluetooth stereo headset
10. Slim and stylish
11. TFT display with a QVGA resolution
12. Dedicated quick camera settings keys

Nokia 5070 review
Made almost entirely of plastic the black, white and red colour scheme is not very inspirational, though Nokia has come up with a grey dot pattern for the back cover and a metal strip to house the back mounted camera which help give it a bit of a lift.

The good news is that, as is often the case with Nokia's mid-range and lower end handsets, the front keys are all large. The numberpad keys are sizeable and have a huge raised area. Anyone keen on fast texting might find this mobile ideal in the keypad department. The navigation key is raised from its surroundings and its central select button follows the trend of being large. The same comment applies to the Softmenu, Call and End keys.
With a generous amount of the front fascia given over to keys, the screen is necessarily squeezed. I measured it at 1.8 inches corner to corner. It is a CSTN type and delivers just 128 x 160 pixels. These two features mean the screen lacks vibrancy and definition. The 65 thousand colour-count is low too, and between them the screen specifications are uninspiring.

There is no music player, but there is an FM radio. I can't recall ever seeing another phone offering that combination - it is more usual to have a music player but no radio. The radio picks up a signal well enough and the phone's volume is loud enough for plonking it on the desk when you want to listen.
As well as the loudspeaker you can play music through the provided headset. This is a fairly average one-piece affair and is needed even when you are using the loudspeaker as the FM antenna is in the headset. It uses Nokia's Pop-Port connector.
You also need to use the Pop-Port if you want to connect to a computer. The 5070 can synchronise with a PC via the Nokia PC Suite software but you'll need to download the software and buy a cable as neither are included in the box. The mains power cable is one of those annoying tiny-headed Nokia chargers. Oh for mini USB!
A major omission is the absence of Bluetooth. Infra red is here and, as there is no support for flash memory, this could be crucial for getting photos you shoot with the built-in camera off the device. The internal memory is limited to just 4.3MB which needs to house all your downloads as well as any photos you take.
The good news, if it can be so described, is that photos won't take up much space. The camera's maximum resolution is 640 x 480 pixels and it has one other shooting resolution - 80 x 96. Even shot at high quality, the setting I always use for our mobile phone reviews, image quality is not that hot.

There is also no flash and using this camera is very much a case of point and click, and take a punt on what you'll get. On the phone you can edit images by adding text, a frame, clip art, or a thumbnail of another image, and you can crop images.
My sample photos illustrate the camera's limitations. The coloured dish, shot under normal household lighting, is fairly good, with reasonable colour reproduction. The flowers are not evenly exposed or in focus and thus the shot is disappointing. I rather like the cat photo but it's not a representation of the real world. She was photographed with light streaming in from a window behind me as I took the photo and there was a room, not darkness, in the background.
I couldn't assess battery life via my usual rundown test playing music, so I fully loaded the battery and then listened to the radio instead. It didn't get me through a full working day and I imagine you'll need to charge this phone daily.
Verdict
Dopod C750 - Watch for more
The leaked image shows a mat black colour phone which gives the phone the serious look. The slider phone is also seems to be loaded with a 2 megapixel camera, even businessmen need to take pictures sometime. Quite opposite to the trend where cell phone makers are reducing the size of the keys to make the casing small and slim, the Dopod C750 features a well laid out keypad which enables the user to type the numbers quickly. The user will not have any problem of pressing the controls buttons which did not intend to in this keypad. The phone also has a stereo sound but that’s all we have no information on the music features like whether it has Fm or not etc etc. The phone also has a mini USB connector and a micro SD card slot. The Dopod will be available in market in November.
Following are the features of Dopod C750
It is a slider with a full QWERTY keypad
It features 2.6 inch VGA touchscree
It is laced with Windows Mobile
It features a 2 mega pixel camera
It has mini USB connector
It has a MicroSD support

Audi Mobile Device - Audi's 3G/WiFi mobile phone controls vehicle functions

Audi, apparently not satisfied with integrating Apple’s iconic iPhone into their vehicles, has a new concept on their hands. The Audi metroproject concept, dubbed the “Audi Mobile Device,” is an iPhone-like mobile phone that also controls the vehicle’s functions. Keyless entry, heating/cooling, navigation input, audio/video - they’re all controlled from the Audi Mobile Device’s touchscreen. And, once you get inside your car, the 3G and WiFi packin’ device slots right into the dashboard - slick.
But it doesn’t end there. The Audi Mobile Device is wirelessly linked with your vehicle at all times, and will not only notify you of a break-in but also snap a pic of the intruder with your Audi’s on-board camera and wirelessly beam it to you. Then, if said intruder actually makes off with the car, the system will activate its tracking function (think LoJack) - leading you and the cops to the robber’s hideout.
Cars are becoming increasingly more wired these days, so it just makes sense for mobile phone convergence to cross over into the automotive world. Soon your mobile phone will also be your car key, will also be your audio/video player, will also be your vehicle’s anti-theft system, and will also be your car’s remote control. We’re not sure if the Audi metroproject concept will actually make it into production, but we’re crossing our fingers.
More pics of the Audi Mobile Device’s interface.
