Sustainable innovation from Sony Ericsson

Just like we were promised, Sony Ericsson has brought to the market two new cell phones, both based on an eco-friendly technology that first appeared within the GreenHeart concept. They are called Sony Ericsson C901 GreenHeart and Sony Ericsson Naite, being the living proof of their “ongoing commitment to taking a lead on environmental sustainability”. The great thing is that the purpose has been reached without neglecting the design and the functionality of the product.

Along with these two green cell phones, Sony Ericsson also launched the MH300 GreenHeart headset, which is said to be “one of the greenest headset on the market”.

First of all, I should tell you that the C901 GreenHeart will be equipped with an electronic version of the so very famous manuals, so that the paper one is replaced, which helps us save approximately 90% in paper and reduce the impact the transport of the product has over the environment. On the other hand, the case is made of recycled plastics, in proportion of 50%, while the display light sensor is optimised, using a smaller amount of energy.

Both phones will come with a charger that consumes small amounts of energy, being one of the first such charger to come to market. This way, there is a reduction of approximately 15% in the overall quantity of CO2 footprint.

The C901 will be equipped with the so-called WalkMate, an application that allows users to talk about what it takes in order to be eco-friendly with the help of a comparation between a walk and a journey made by car. Naite, on the other hand, comes with Ecomate, an application that helps the users make the greenest choices of them all.

The features of the C901 GreenHeart include a 2.2 inches TFT display which is scratch resistant with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels, a five megapixel camera with Xenon flash, Smile Shutter, Face Detection and up to 16x digital zoom, media player with PlayNow and TrackID, Access NetFront, FM radio with RDS, video streaming, YouTube support, Bluetooth, USB, Google Maps, geo-tagging, an internal memory of 120MB and memory stick Micro card support (M2).

The C901 measures 105 x 45 x 13 millimeters and weighs 107 grams, providing up to 9.5 hours of talk time and up to 430 hours of stand-by time.

The Sony Ericsson Naite, on the other hand, comes with a 2.0 megapixel camera with 2.5x digital zoom and video recording capabilities, media player with PlayNow and TrackID, FM radio with RDS, Bluetooth technology, Google Maps, USB, YouTube support, a 2.2 inches TFT QVGA display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels, an internal memory of 100MB and a SanDisk microSD card support.

This phone measures 108 x 47 x 12.6 millimeters and weighs 84 grams. The battery provides up to 9 hours and 40 minutes, respectively 4 hours and 10 minutes on GSM and UMTS, and up to 380 hours on both GSM and UMTS networks.

The Sony Ericsson Naite is expected to start selling in the third quarter of this year, being available in two different colors: Giner Red and Vapour Silver.
