iPhone: Charging the battery

iPhone has an internal rechargeable battery. To charge the iPhone battery:

  • Connect iPhone to a power outlet using the included cable and power adapter to charge the battery.
  • Or connect iPhone to your computer (not your keyboard) using the included cable to charge the battery and sync. Your computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPhone battery may drain.

An icon in the upper-right corner of the screen shows battery charging status. If you charge the battery while syncing or using iPhone, it might take longer to charge.

Important: If iPhone is very low on power, it shows a message saying "Please Connect to Power" or "Charging... Please Wait" and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it. If iPhone is extremely low on power, the display may be blank for up to two minutes before showing the low-power message.

Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced by an authorized service provider. Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. For more information, go to:
www.apple.com/batteries.

The battery indicator on iPhone shows approximately how much charge is left in the battery. For information on how long the battery is expected to last between charges, see the iPhone technical specifications.

Note: With iTunes 7.3, you may notice that your computer will not go into sleep (low power) mode when iPhone is connected to it via USB. This is to make sure iPhone continues to charge overnight. If you want your computer to go into sleep mode when iPhone is connected, you can manually set your computer to sleep. For information on how to do this, check the documentation included with your computer. If iPhone is connected to your computer when your computer is in sleep mode, and it is not recognized by your computer when your computer comes out of sleep mode, try disconnecting and reconnecting iPhone to your computer.
